Opening Days at Casady School for the 2017-18 school year were full of excitement.
UPDATED January 14, 2018: The ONLY reason I decided to make this video public was because I recently learned of an incident this past semester. A cheer team from a local OKCPS school was cheering for their team at Casady school. They endured stares and looks of disapproval from the crowd during the entire game. Afterwards, someone called their school's athletic director and wrote the OKCPS school board saying that the young ladies were "too aggressive" in their cheering. (Perhaps code words for something else?) Have you ever seen a cheer competition or battle? Those ladies are SERIOUS about cheer. I was floored that 7 months after recording this video, the diversity climate obviously hasn't changed and understanding ALL cultures hasn't been a pressing issue. Whether it was a parent or school staff who made the call really doesn't matter. It's about the culturally insensitive climate that is allowed to exist here, in OKC and across this country. My initial goal was to inform the Casady community of how our family felt and steps they needed to take to make it a more culturally sensitive and loving community. However, hearing this recent story, HURT MY HEART for these young ladies and I decided that unless we begin to share OUR experiences and be willing to listen & understand others, nothing will ever change. Original description: This is a private link sent to the Casady School community to facilitate discussion and hopefully change for the future. All we can do is share our personal family experience, although we know there are other families who have experienced similar situations. Continued discussion will not benefit our children directly, but it serves as a bridge to bless other families of all cultures for years to come. I encourage you to begin open and honest discussions within the school community regarding race, multiculturalism and cultural sensitivity. Be blessed!
Not competing in the OSSAA conference can lead to this Casady team feeling a little misunderstood.
